pregnant couples practice birth partner support at their antenatal class in truro

Group antenatal classes done differently…

The truth is that traditional antenatal education doesn’t work for everyone.

Which is why I approach antenatal education and birth preparation in the way that I do.

Gemma Kitto from Born to Birth Cornwall helps a pregnant woman and her partner practise breathing techniques for labour at an antenatal class in Truro, Cornwall

Every pregnant, birthing and postpartum family I work with confirms my firmly held doula and mum philosophy:

The only person who knows what’s best for you, your body and your baby is you.

BUT equally, my lived experiences show me just how hard it can be to believe that when you’re the one making the decisions.

Two pregnant woman are supported by their partners as they practise pain management techniques for labour during a group antenatal class in Truro Cornwall

And that’s not really surprising, is it?

We’ve been raised in a world where the expert is someone or something else & most definitely not you.

Information is prioritised over instinct, and advice supersedes intuition.

So many of the big antenatal courses & programmes focus on this: teaching you the best way to get the birth of your dreams.

  • A set list of things to know

  • Specific ways of doing things

  • Particular ways to do it ‘right’

But as a doula who knows how birth & baby life works in reality, trust me…

It’s not that simple.

Group of pregnant women discuss their hopes, fears and emotions around labour and birth at their group antenatal course in Truro Cornwall

Here’s the truth: modern, mainstream journeys into parenthood are all about nuance

Yes, you can benefit from knowledge.

Yes, it’ll help to have some practical skills.

Yes, knowing the options will help the plan.

… but how much any of this will actually help you entirely depends on your experiences, lifestyles, budget & priorities.

That’s why I design my antenatal workshops, classes and courses around…

  • tailored & personalised content

  • relevant and realistic scenarios

  • exploration not explanation

  • discussion & problem solving

There’s no ‘right’ way here: just the antenatal approach that feels best for you.

Birth Preparation in Truro: FAQ

  • Individual workshops are priced at £65 and are…

    • priced per birth team or couple (one ticket = both of you)

    • include access to exclusive printed & online resources, and further support from me.

  • The group sizes for my birth preparation workshops in Truro are relatively small, especially in comparison to big name courses; our maximum class size is seven couples or birth teams.

I do this for a few reasons:

    • to keep the vibe nice and relaxed.

    • so that I get chance to talk to each team personally through each session.

    • So that we can use the space we have comfortably.

If the group size and dynamic is important to you, please get in touch. I’ll be able to advise a suitable class for you to book into.

  • Yes, absolutely.

Whilst we do cover theoretical situations and need-to-know information, I do my best to frame this in active and (wherever possible) practical activities.

This might be ‘doing’ but it also might be discussing, problem-solving, exploring or reflecting.

  • All sessions take place at ‘The Family Space’ in Truro Business Park, Threemilestone.

I have worked with this venue for years, choosing their slightly higher price point for good reason.

    • the environment is calm & relaxing

    • the furniture is genuinely comfortable, even for pregnant people!

    • it’s warm, welcoming & well-designed with plenty of space for practical activities

PLUS, there is plenty of free parking on-site.

  • Yes, absolutely. In every way possible!
