Birth Pool Hire in Cornwall: FAQ
-
Your hire period will stretch from 37 weeks until 42 weeks.
This is the time period that the vast majority of babies are born in, and also the time frame considered within guidance for an NHS supported homebirth.
-
Your £50 non-refundable deposit is required upon booking; the remaining balance is required no later than 24 hours before your birth pool is delivered.
-
Your birth pool will arrive with all the kit you need to use your birth pool safely during labour, including:
pool liner (single use)
10m hose with tap adapters
floor protection & non-slip mat
strainer and water thermometer
Depending on your height, you may choose to buy a step to help you in and out of the pool. If you want to do a ‘wet’ trial run you will also need to buy a new hose and liner for hygiene reasons.
-
Taps: you will receive tap adapters that will help you attach the hose to your chosen tap; if these do not work, a hardware store (like B&Q) will be able to supply some.
Water system: your birth pool will hold 480 liters of water and it’ll need to be warm. If you have a combi-boiler this will not be an issue but might be more complicated if you have an immersion heater. If you’d like more information on this, book a discovery call and we can talk it through.
-
We will arrange your delivery date at the point of booking; the aim is to deliver your pool at 37+0 gestation of pregnancy, but if this is not possible we will get as close as we can.
-
You will! You’ll be given full instructions on how to do this quickly and cleanly.
Your birth pool will come with a full checklist describing what needs to be disposed of, and what needs to be returned to me.
It sounds overwhelming, but I promise its not nearly as messy or difficult as you imagine.
However if this sounds too much, I can come and pack it all down for you for an additional fee.
-
When filled, the birth pool will weigh around 487kg, increasing significantly when you (the labouring mama) gets in!
With this in mind, it is not recommended to use the birth pool on anything other than on a ground floor surface. The more solid, the better!
-
I will collect your birth pool from your home within 48 hours of your baby’s birth; this time frame is essential for the pool to be properly cleaned and sanitised.
To enable me to do this, I ask that you notify me within 24 hours of your baby’s birth.
-
Because everything is sanitised and sterile, it is not recommended to use the birth pool before you are in established, active labour (eg: 5-6cm)
You should not repeatedly use the birth pool or any supplied accessories multiple times; this increases the risk of infection to both you and your baby.
-
This is why I recommend settling the balance for your birth pool the week before you are due to receive it!
Your deposit of £50 is non-refundable as it secures your pool for the dates required; the remainder covers the five week hire period.
-
Your hire period officially ends on day 42+0 of your pregnancy; however if:
you have not yet had your baby
and if you still wish to use the birth pool at home
and if there is availability, you can keep the pool
… it may be possible to arrange an extension to your birth pool hire at my discretion.
-
This is unlikely; the birth pool and all accessories are thoroughly inspected before delivery to ensure that they’re fit for use.
I also ask that you do a dry run set up within 3 days of delivery to check the kit for yourself.
If any damage or malfunction is found, please notify me immediately and I will arrange replacement kit.
If the damage has been done accidentally by yourselves, please let me know in the same way. I will arrange replacement kit and will invoice you (as stated and agreed in terms and conditions) for the replacement kit.
-
This birth pool is designed to support a labour at home; while there may be circumstances that mean you transfer from home to hospital with midwife support, it’s not designed for early labour use.
To use water at home before going to hospital, try using your bath or shower. It’s much easier and will mean you don’t have a birth pool to contend with when you come home with your baby!
-
Your human rights state that you are allowed to give birth however and wherever you like, so technically no.
However, not only is it courteous to inform your midwife of your intention to use a birth pool, she’ll also be able to give you guidance on the best ways to use your birth pool effectively.
-
Hiring the birth pool does not mean you will either want or get the opportunity to use it.
No refunds or changes in charge can be issued should you not use your birth pool either as planned or for the full hire period.
-
The birth pool takes 480 liters of water and can take around 45 mins to fill, depending on your water pressure & hot water availability. It will also need topping up to maintain the 36-37 degree recommended temperature.
-
